A127 Trail - Artists and Venues (Basildon, Barleylands, Billericay and Wickford Art trail)

Basildon in 2011 – The  year of living artistically

If anything proves the merit of displaying works of art in a shopping centre this year, then it has most certainly been Basildon-Eastgate Art.
The gallery has been occupying an empty unit on the Upper Mall since opening to the public on Saturday July 2nd and has attracted phenomenal interest.  Whether it is work loaned by the Basildon Arts Trust or a personal creation from one of our talented local artists, the exhibition of works has demonstrated just how seriously Basildon takes art as a profession, a leisure pursuit or merely a reason to give pleasure. In essence, such an initiative brings together the town, about which it makes a huge positive statement during somewhat difficult economic times.
With autumn approaching, the character of Basildon glows brightly once again through the second Arts Trail, the success of the first turning this into a key event.  Visitors to the Trail will be able to appreciate not only the sheer depth of artworks that exist within the Borough, but also the diversity of range and style.  The Arts Trail is something with which Eastgate is extremely proud to be associated, and we regard it as a key component within our corporate responsibility programme.
Eastgate looks forward to joining the Basildon Borough arts industry for more events in the future, its thriving success owing so much to the skill, enthusiasm and dedication of so many altruistic   members of our various communities. Ian Clark Centre Manager

Welcome to the A127 Trail 2011-
We would like to welcome you to the appropriately renamed A127 Trail, following the huge success of the Basildon District Art Trail last year. The art trail is now recognised as a community event of some magnitude to the Borough, which aims to bring the arts and   business together in this annual joint promotion.
Recognising this success, we are pleased to announce that we have more than doubled the number of artists taking part to over 60 and the period has therefore been extended to ten days to add to your pleasure. It will now run from the 9th to the 18th of September 2011.
Once more the retailers of Basildon, Billericay and Wickford (not forgetting Barleylands) will be helping you to discover a diverse range of art, created by artists who may produce their work simply for pleasure or are perhaps fortunate enough to make a living from it. Either way, we sincerely hope that you, our audience, get huge enjoyment from the fruits of our labours.
The A127 Trail is a non-profit event, which is run by a group of volunteers. It will provide a route through the towns of Basildon, Billericay and Wickford, encouraging thousands of people to discover, or re-discover their community. A diverse range of local artists’ artwork will be showcased in various venues across the Borough.

Artist Spotlight - Carl Brind

What initially got you into art?
Both my mum and uncle encouraged me to be creative, when I was young. There would always be pads of paper and pencils around the house. I would sit watching people like Rolf Harris and Tony Hart on the TV.

Have you studied art (school, college, evening course, uni, self taught)?
I attended Basildon College as a mature student, to study A levels in Art, Photography and Media. I continued at Basildon College and studied Btec Art and Design. After completing the course i went onto study Graphic Fine Art at  UEL (University of East London- Docklands Campus). After there, I studied Graphic Design at Barking.

How would you describe your artwork?
I produce a variety of artwork. My pop art paintings can be made up of using just two colours. However I have started to include 'layers' to my pop art paintings. My paintings are mainly produced using acrylic paints on canvas, although I have started to use spray paint.
I also produce graphic illustrations. I start with illustrations produced by hand. I then fuse together photography and typography on computer.

Who is your favourite artist/artists?
I have a wide range of artists who inspire me. I enjoy artwork by people such as Rolf Harris, Litchenstein, Warhol, Lowry, Banksy, Mr Brainwash, Matt Busch....

What artists have influenced your work?
See above

Have you exhibited your artwork/ Where can people view your artwork?
I have exhibited my artwork a few times at Basildon Library. In the summer of 2010, my artwork was on display at Basfest. In September 2010, as part of the Basildon District Art trail, I had a selection of artwork on display within the Eastgate Shopping Centre in Basildon. In August 2011, one of my paintings will be displayed within the Casbah Club (the original home of the Beatles) in Liverpool. In September I will have a selection of paintings and prints on display in Brown Sugar/ Slipped Disc in Billericay, Essex. You can also visit my website at www.carlbrind.com

What venue was your artwork shown at during the 2010 art trail?
Eastgate Shopping Centre

Do you have any exhibitions planned for the future?
I will once again be part of the A127 Trail and will be exhibiting in Brown Sugar/ Slipped Discs in Billericay.

Do you have a website, where people can view your artwork?

Any advice for people looking to get into art?
You are never too old.
Dont be afraid of making mistakes
There are no right or wrong ways of doing things in art.
